I think it's hard to say whether one song was 'inspired' by another, as there are so many songs (not just Queen) which are similar to each other in some way.

You could say that BlockBuster by the Sweet was inspired by David Bowie's The Jean Genie as they both have an almost identical riff, and let's face it, almost all AC/DC songs are born from the same stock.

The opening chords of the slow version of Hammer To Fall sounds like It's Late, and you could say that songs like Save Me and It's A Hard Life have the same structure.

Don't really know where I'm going with this now... 😄 I think it's just that there's millions and millions of songs, and only so many chords and and rhythms, so some songs are bound to sound like others, intentionally or unintentionally. 🙂 Still, I don't want to kill the thread, so carry on. 😁

I'm convinced that, in reality, both those songs are referencing an older tune, probably a Strauss waltz. I looked around a little on the internet, and it turns out I'm not the only one to think so.

This is from a paper called "Queen's classical music references, 1973-76; or, was Queen a progressive rock band?" by Nick Braae:

"The following year, Freddie Mercury wrote "Millionaire Waltz", which, like "Bohemian Rhapsody" features an episode that alludes to a classical style. Here is Brian May's guitar solo, following the 12/8 hard rock section. The episode is a clear imitation of a Viennese waltz as this piano reduction shows, there are obvious parallels with the primary theme from Johann Strauss II's Weiner [sic] Blut waltz, op. 354, such as the upwards melodic leap from the fifth to the third scale degrees, the chromatic neighbor notes, the repetition of the theme over lengthy tonic and dominant harmonies, and, the juxtaposition of legato and staccato articulation. The primary theme of Strauss' Blue Danube is also recalled with the accelerating harmonic rhythm and thickened texture as the section reaches its climax"

I'd have to agree that there are bits of the Wiener Blut (Op. 351) and "An der schönen, blauen Donau" (Op. 314) by Johann Strauss II in there, and that the Sherman brothers also took inspiration from there. Look them up, I think you'll agree (ed: the waltzes, not the Sherman brothers).

yep, robbybloodshed - a very basic punk riff. i think you're right - SHA isn't really "inspired by" - especially, when you consider that "Sheer Heart Attack" had been a WIP for Roger since 1974 - finally being finished for NOTW...and the Cortinas song only being released around the time SHA was being finished.
i'd be inclined to call SHA the bastard son of Roger's own MTRnR.
