dunno if people have heard the new Beatles track? but if what I read is correct, it seems Lennon's parts are from the same source that gave us Real Love and Free as a Bird, almost 3 decades ago? If so, techology has really blown up some new doors in terms of what you can extract from an old tape that's not in pristine quality. Surely there are some sub par cassette recordings of Freddie somwhere?! Fingers crossed  My issue with that, is that while there may be enough content to squeeze out of Freddie's voice, there's no way John would come back to record anything that he's missing on. It wouldn't sit right with me if Queen started making "new Queen songs" with Freddie, Brian, and Roger, but not John. Of course, John was on FIA and LMIHYA, but a lot of the material that Freddie recorded after Innuendo were things that he recorded without the band, for them to do it later. It wouldn't shock me if some of these unearthed demos don't contain John. |

The parts were very well isolated, so that every other part could be used to hide as much of the deficiencies as possible, and so that every known trick could be used to polish them up - every *old* trick that is. The latest technology makes it possible to work on stereo/mono recordings almost as if they were multitrack recordings in some ways, but that's about it. It's still not possible to make crappy audio sound good. You still have to bury it in a mix to cover up the poor quality.

I disagree actually, John's vocal could have sat much more naturally in the mix. The isolated vocal shown in the preview movie was very well done, so it was in really prime condition for mastering. It just kind of comes down to how the mastering went. It doesn't help that the mix was SLATHERED with compression, it's actually insane how compressed that song was. |

I personally am looking forward to The Best Of Greatest Hits, consisting of all 17 tracks from GH, The Invisible Man from GHII, Another One Bites The Dust (Wyclef remix) from GHIII, and the William Orbit remix of LMIYHA as a bonus track.

I have always loved the melody in Let's Make Love and think Freddie's vocals could possibly be lifted from the scratchy tape much like The Beatles did with Now & Then. Maybe somehow combine it with Love Makin' Love. Some work is definitely needed, but there's some gold there.

I’m fairly certain Let’s Make Love exists in a releasable quality, it’s just whoever recorded it must have done it from their pocket or something, hence the awful fidelity. It seems the song was polished for Queen Forever. Sadly, it didn't make it to the album.

the BBC had no particular archiving policy until 1978. Tapes were routinely wiped until that time. The exceptions were programmes that they exported for overseas broadcast, stuff like Monty Python. So what does survive from 77 will be down to good luck and not any kind of sensible  call by Auntie Here's something that may be worth considering. The documentary that the footage was filmed for was completely cancelled, nothing came out of it for decades. Despite that, today there's still like 10~ hours* of surviving footage. For a completely cancelled project, I'd feel like it'd go entirely down the drain had it been on the radar of the BBC. I'm not saying that every single shot has been preserved, I definitely doubt that, but I'd wager that there's definitely enough material for a project of some substance. *(IIRC, there's about 4 hours of JUST the 2 different sessions of interviews with Freddie alone, so this is just an estimate, but one I'd say is reasonable.) |

I’m getting a good feeling about a 4k uhd / Vinyl release of the Montreal show (and hopefully more, like a Live box set) to coincide with week 50 which is also the the weekend that coincides with the IMAX opening announced today.
Unless, all we get is the IMAX weekend for week 50 of the 50th anniversary. Wouldn’t be surprised either.
