Guess what re-release I am not going to buy. If they seriously wanted to do a decent compilation again then re-do GH3... But it has an exclusive slipcase cover!
For only 10£!

Just more, more, more of that Jazz ! It's a rip off ! It just about sums things up for Queen a band who I have loved and followed for the the past 48 years and spent thousands of pounds on. Well the buck stops here and now, Brian ,Roger are rolling in money and they ain't getting any more from me unless they release something of interest, which is very unlikely !

Sold 7 million copies in the UK now. 7 MillionI presume that excludes copies sold as part of the gold collection or platinum collection as well. The rerelease strategy seems to be doing all right.

For the cost of a new sticker, you get free news coverage and make the record harder for other artists to achieve. I'd advise the band to do the same.

I'm going to be honest...for an album that's 41 years old and has been milked to death over the years on various formats...I'm surprised it's ONLY 7m. Between the few hundred of us here, we must have more copies than that

I'd advise the band to do the same. It's only a million ahead of Abba, despite a 10 year head start, and with Abba doing a big promotional event that's inevitably going to increase their pace. And then there's Adele. Her 21 album has sold 5m in 10 years. Her new album will drive more sales of that when it comes out (plus the 5m figure is 2 years old) I think keeping that #1 slot may get tricky ...maybe the next tour will have to be a Greatest Hits tour...

...and it's astounding that if all of the compilation LPs are removed from the UK best-seller list - leaving only standalone albums, Queen, Abba, Bob Marley & Madonna are nowhere to be seen:
5,340,000 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles 5,290,000 - 21 - Adele 4,940,000 - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? - Oasis 4,470,000 - Thriller - Michael Jackson 4,470,000 - The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 4,350,000 - Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits 4,140,000 - Bad - Michael Jackson 4,090,000 - Rumours - Fleetwood Mac 3,930,000 - Back to Black - Amy Winehouse 3,600,000 - 25- Adele 3,450,000 - Stars - Simply Red 3,430,000 - Come On Over - Shania Twain 3,380,000 - x - Ed Sheeran 3,370,000 - Bat Out of Hell - Meatloaf 3,360,000 - Back to Bedlam - James Blunt 3,340,000 - Urban Hymns - The Verve
Note: Adele & Ed Sheeran's sales are inflated since streams have been counted as "sales".

A Night at the opera could be somewhere, if only digital downloads since 2003 from Bohemian Rhapsody, YMBF and streaming had been added to the actual album and not to greatest hits. Interesting is that AKOM & The The Works albums are in top 100. There is a list from OCC. I used to check from time to time.

Looks to me like most people can easily name 3-4 song titles from Abba's GH album rather than naming any of their album titles, apart from "The Visitors" maybe, as it was their last studio album for so many years.
Why is that so? Singles get played on the radio way more often than any album tracks and when a band has released so many singles the success lays on them rather than the albums. I think with Queen it's similar because they are well known for having so many hit singles and this makes album rather uninteresting to the casual listener.
Today in 2022 the availability of music has increased and it spreads faster, apart from vinyl releases today but that's another story for itself.
Back in the day you would have needed to buy a full album and not everyone was willing to spend money on something unknown when you could get a compilation of the most well known songs at the first place. A person I know for example is not interested in the studio albums of Queen but likes their greatest hits and that's it.
It's not a solid "rule" as exceptions do exist. Pink Floyd to mention another example has a case of the direct opposite success. Their albums made big money rather than single releases. Not many singles released of PF too concidering how many songs they released in their career. It's hard to release many singles when a lot of your songs tend to be longer than 7-8 minutes as we Queen fans already know. ;-)

I have two copies of Greatest Hits, and neither one I spent my own money on. The first was one of the more recent reissues that my brother in law got me for Christmas, and the other, an original ‘81 Elektra release, is my dad’s copy that I nabbed from his record collection before he moved a few states away last summer.

I have and have only ever had one copy of GH; the original N. America issue LP, which I received for Christmas in 1981. I still have it.
