Queen Greatest Hits To Be Re-Released In New Formats Marking Queen’s 50th Anniversary Year And 40 Years Since Original Release
Collector’s Edition CD With Exclusive Slipcase Cover & Cassette Available To Pre-Order HERE
Already wearing the crown as the UK’s biggest selling album of all time and achieving the third longest chart run on the UK Official Charts, Queen’s 1981 ‘Greatest Hits’ collection is getting a limited edition makeover to mark not only the band’s historic 50th landmark, but also the album’s 40th anniversary.
First released in 1981, Greatest Hits stands alone as the first and only album to have sold over 6 million copies in the UK (6.75 million sales to date) with global sales in excess of 25 million.
Added to that, in the UK the collection has now spent over 900 weeks on the UK Albums Chart, and has been certified a staggering 22× platinum.
And there’s more…according to the Official Charts Company who crowned it ‘Britain’s most popular album of the past 60 years’, one in four British households already own a copy of the album.
Now, following the record-breaking global success of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ feature film – earning almost $1billion at the international box office - a new generation of faithful Queen followers has emerged ensuring that Queen’s undiminishing appeal will continue well beyond their current record-breaking achievements.
These historic landmarks are now to be marked and celebrated with a brand new collector’s edition Greatest Hits CD with exclusive slipcase cover and a limited edition Cassette format, both to be released globally July 2.
In addition, the Official Queen Online Store will exclusively offer the collector’s edition Greatest Hits CD and four highly limited band member colour cassettes. This version of the Slipcase CD encases a CD-sized print personally signed by band members Brian May and Roger Taylor (limited to 1000 copies only).
All formats available to pre-order HERE.

Yep! Just got the email. How f**ken disappointing. I'm almost f**ken done with these guys.
I know we say 'A greatest hits re-release' as a joke but holy f**k I can't believe they did it again!

Why do I have to love a band that has no interest in doing something special for its fans and only wants to grab money in an easy way? The community here is much more dedicated to make this a memorable 50th anniversary than they can ever imagine to do. And I must say I'm really proud of us!

Jeeps, I was genuinely excited when I saw preview email on phone. Then I opened the email. Whoop… Whoop… Not even a ‘bonus’ track? I don’t own a cassette player anymore, why would I?

I might have actually bought a signed CD, because I've not got anything signed by them, but not with a load of cassettes with it. The trouble is, I bet the 1000 that have been signed have already sold out, which once again proves to QPL that the fans will buy anything. 🙄

The trouble is, I bet the 1000 that have been signed have already sold out, which once again proves to QPL that the fans will buy anything. 🙄 Yes. It sold out. And as a fan in the USA, I couldn't even buy it as their "International" store only made the autograph bundle available to residents of the UK! Tease us with a Miracle box set that they never deliver on. But here's a set of colored cassettes of the same "Greatest Hits" album we keep trotting out every couple of years. Heck, if it had to be the greatest hits, I could have offered something to make it a bit different and more exciting: CD releases of the various countries "Greatest Hits" that had their own unique track listings. I might have purchased a copy of the original US Elektra version of "Greatest Hits." I might have purchased some of the other countries, especially if the covers were made to be look like the original covers for each country. Even better, a nice Blu Ray set of all of the videos remastered in their original aspect ratio with high quality audio and bonuses that included the alternate versions of videos. Heck, while I've seen bands from the '90's remastering their videos in HD for YouTube, Queen hasn't even done that, other than Bo Rhap. We're still dealing with versions from over a decade ago that were pulled from the poorly mastered and cropped "Greatest Video Hits" DVD's!

QPL ... What can we give the hardcore fans for the 50th anniversary? BM... We haven`t done a greatest hits release for a few years, will that be ok? RT... How about some old version cassette tapes? The fans won`t have them. And we can sign a few. QPL.... Sounds like a good cash cow, sorry I meant idea.
Good thing we are in this excellent forum.
The above statement might have happened or might have not. A future episode of Urban Tales.

It's literally the exact same track listing as the existing CD... what's the point in it? I would've bought the signed version had it not been sold out. Yet they didn't think to include a vinyl version, which would've sold much better than CD's and cassettes

Yet they didn't think to include a vinyl version, which would've sold much better than CD's and cassettes Ah but it’s already out on vinyl! (I got it for Christmas.) So obviously they wouldn’t want to reprint something that’s been already released, don’t want to flood the market…! (/sarcasm) In all seriousness, what a joke. No wonder fans are jumping ship. I’ve been on a box set kick lately and have purchased book sets of Jethro Tull and the Who’s Sell Out album. Whether less than $50 (the former) or over $100 (the latter) they’ve been beautifully presented with gorgeous packaging. Imagine Queen doing what Jethro Tull has (being a graphic designer by trade, I HAVE done it, just to keep my skills sharp) – book sets for each album with fully annotated notes from Ian Anderson, a biography, pictures, etc – even for the “lesser” albums. What a treat! Then they do this. Eh, no worries. They don’t get my money anymore. They can keep doing this crap. I’m done giving them my money. Not another penny from me until they get off their asses and give us what we want. The long promised Miracle box set would’ve been a start, but that seems dead in the water.

Really guys, i don't know what to say anymore. The only excitement i have regarding Queen is this forum and all the gems that's been shared here. It makes me so angry that they piss on the old fans that stuck by them from day one. This is why more and more rare material pops up. Fans are fed up with QPL and are now putting rare gems online. We just have to forget on the band in 2021 and just focus and share gems within the old Queen era. I am done with them but i will always love my collection audio and video wise.

Ah but it's okay guys, don't worry! Brian has just said on his instagram post quote: "And something ELSE is also coming! Details here soon" I wonder what regurgitated pile of crap this will be. My money's on Greatest Hits II being released in coloured wax cylinders and a laser picture disc of Greg Brooks' face.

What is really boiling my urine with this release is guys like my brother, who would've bought anything 'official' would have splurged a lot of money he didn't have on the entire release. Why have 4 x cassettes with different pictures? Oh it is to make collectors buy them multiple times. Why not just offer the signed stuff to fan club members? They are already on ebay. Someone in QPL needs to wake up.

Aren't compilation albums usually instigated by the record company?
As a "non-active studio band" they have the problem they can't deliver, but are contractually obligated to have output. Hence: Absolute Greatest; the last album released under Parlophone/EMI banner. A last attempt to cash in on them before a potential departure.
Queens EMI contract came to an end in 2010 and the signed under UMG, which gave them a new financial boost, but this also means they need new releases on the new label. The entire back catalogue needed a re-release.
Back in 1990 (with Freddie) Queen signed to Hollywood Records for their US releases. The availability of Queen's catalogue and future releases were hard to find so they had to oblige. Hollywood Records didn't know they invested in a sinking ship and i'm actually curious as to whether they knew Freddie was ill when they signed or they just kept that even from them... What kind of implications did that give them when he died? There must be some clause in the contract that any liability needs to be addressed right?
tl;dr: This compilation was probably the idea of the record company.

I just saw the e-mail. Shameless, an unintentional self-parody. There is no defense for this craven cash-grab. Fuck 'em, if they can't be bothered to put the least bit of effort into releases, they're not getting a penny from me. At this point, I seriously hope someone stiffs them business-wise. They deserve it.

I believe I only read somewhere recently that they are contracted to release at least one new product per year. Just because they're a "non-active studio band" doesn't mean they can't release some interesting live material. I'm not saying Brian or Roger are personally to blame, but to release GH1 again, when it's already sold gazillions, in a format which most people won't even be able to play now, is just an insult to fans. But hey, the CD has a snazzy new slipcase! 🙄

Hollywood Records didn't know they invested in a sinking ship and i'm actually curious as to whether they knew Freddie was ill when they signed or they just kept that even from them... From what I have read i.e. Is This the Real Life The Untold Story of Queen by Mark Blake, Freddie's death boosted the sales of their back catalogue enormously.

Peter Paterno the attorney on the deal for Hollywood Records has stated that he knew Freddie was ill. He requested to meet Freddie prior to signing the deal and that Mercury agreed to the request.

I do believe I read somewhere that Jim Beach told them in the vaguest terms possible that Freddie was likely not long for this world. QPL may be callous money-grubbers, but they're also managed by a lawyer. They knew what they were doing, and as posted above, Freddie's death helped put Hollywood Records on the map: before this they were a struggling Disney-owned label that had no major artists (not that Queen were exactly a major artist in the U.S. in the mid- to late-80s). EDIT: thanks akirafish and jo for the corroboration!

Freddie's poor health, QPL's astute business sense and this re-re-re-release just make me unnecessarily sad.

f**king money grubbing arseholes!
just for that, i'm not playing any more Queen for a week - in protest. instead i'm going play cover versions of their songs performed by the inimitable legend:
his versions of Save Me and Radio GaGa are quality, but i couldn't find a YT to them.

I'm really looking forward to that and crossing fingers that there's a couple of extras on there we haven't had previously on B-sides etc. Also interested to see (hear) what Brian has been meaning by re-visiting the tracks - you think this means EQ?

Now I am cautiously optimistic for the BTTL reissue, and also Roger's solo album should also deliver some goods, so the year may not be for naught, but in terms of Queen output I guess it's just... this.
